A Diamond is forever – the story of the most valuable gemstone

The word diamond comes from the Greek word “adamas”, meaning unconquerable, invincible. It’s named after its exceptional hardness – it’s also a perfect describing of the timeless popularity of this gemstone!

A protector, tool and decoration for over 3000 years

Diamonds have been desired for thousands of years. In the first century AD, the Roman naturalist Pliny is believed to have said, “Diamond is the most valuable, not only of precious stones but of all things in this world.”.  The first diamonds were discovered over 3000 years ago in India. Back then they were worn as decoration, served as protectors from evil and used in war to give the wearer courage and strength. It was also used as a cutting tool and still is today. A diamond is so hard that the only thing that will scratch it is another diamond.

Only a few can be used in jewelry

Today this magnificent gem can be found in many different countries, and did you know they can also be found in space? The biggest suppliers of diamonds are Russia and Botswana. They are not particularly rare, but still very valuable since there’s only a few that can be used in jewelry. The most valuable kind is the Fancy Color Diamonds, also known as “Fancies”. This type of diamond comes in any color you can imagine, but the yellow and brown ones are the most common. The quality of a diamond is based on the 4C´s: carat, cut, color, and clarity.

A favorite for engagement rings

The association between the romantic and diamonds go way back. For example, the Romans believed that the spikes of Cupid’s arrows were covered in diamonds. It’s a symbol of eternal love, so it’s no surprise that they are the most popular choice for an engagement ring. The first diamond engagement ring that we know of is the one that Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy in 1477. The golden ring had small diamonds arranged to form the letter M. The USA is the biggest consumer of diamonds. The average price for an engagement ring is around 6000 USD, and the average size is approximately one carat.

A diamond’s helping properties

Wearing a diamond is supposed to improve your life. Just like the diamond’s clarity, it will bring you clarity in your life; it will present clear and positive resolutions to your problems. It has the power to reduce stress, fear, emotional pain and protect you from negative energies. This stone will bring you calm and inner peace and fill your negative spaces with the purity of love. The power of a diamond is believed to be stronger when it’s worn around your neck or on your left hand.
